Automatic Transfer Switch
Generally speaking, an Automatic Transfer Switch (or simply ATS) is a device committed to automatically control the switching of two power sources. The Automatic Transfer Switch is often used where you have to control a standby generator. In other words, a system that supplies the load when Utility Power is normal and supplies the load with the generator when there is a failure of the Utility Power. We can say that you can build a panel for your standby generator using an Automatic Transfer Switch controller, an Automatic Transfer Switch of suitable power, a battery charger, terminal blocks and various electrical accessories and fittings enclosed in a rugged metal cabinet. We can finally say that you can make an Automatic Transfer Switch in different ways. For small power, let say up to 100kVA you can make an Automatic Transfer Switch by using two contactors fitted with auxiliary contacts and mechanical interlock. For power over 100kVA you can use a motorized changeover switch that features 0-1-2 states. State -1- is no connection, state -2- is utility power connection and state -3- is generator connection. Some times it is necessary to integrate the automatic transfer switch in the standby generator. In this case we talk about generator control panels rather than automatic transfer switch.
