What is the function & how it works the automatic transfer switch

  An automatic transfer switch must be installed along with a backup power generator. The power generator will provide temporary electrical power if the power utility fails. The automatic transfer switch equipment includes two contactors, an Automatic Transfer Switch controller, various terminal blocks, power relays and miscellaneous electrical components. The automatic transfer switch switches the load [8] between two sources: the generator and power utility. It will not allow the connection of the generator to power utility and vice versa. The typical size of an automatic transfer switch is in between 15kVA up to 150kVA.  As a reference you can open the 60KVA page to analyze all details. An automatic transfer switch panel will make all operations automatically but it will allow total manual control as well. Additional equipment [5] & [6] allows you remote control & monitoring. The Automatic Transfer Switch must be connected by a qualified technician that guarantees an up-to-code installation.

HOW TO USE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH IS THE MUSCLE OF YOUR ATS CONTROL PANEL. YOU WILL NEVER USE IT DIRECTLY. YOU WILL CONTROL IT MANUALLY OR AUTOMATICALLY VIA THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH CONTROLLER. THERE YOU ARE HOW. 

When you apply the DC supply, the display indicates for a second, the version of the software and the date of production. This will help you all the time you need a support from us. The mode of operation are selected by push buttons and indicated by means of green LEDs (solid state indicators).

SELECTING A MODE OF OPERATION FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

Every time the power supply is switched on, if the controller was in TEST or AUTO prior to power down, the Be142 returns to the “AUTO”  mode. In the other cases, the Be142 will enter the OFF mode. The table on the right indicates the allowed modes of operation. An automatic transfer switch fitted with the Be142 controller is the most user friendly control panel for backup generator on the market today. The following sections guide you on how to use the automatic transfer switch in the best way.

HOW TO DISABLE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

 Push the button [OFF] to enter the OFF mode for the automatic transfer switch. The OFF mode clears the fault alarms and allows you to read or program parameters. The Display and LEDs are turned off and a dot on the display will blink slowly. Push one of the push buttons on the front panel to energize the display. You can select this mode of operation when you want to de-activate all functions. The load is forced to be connected to the power utility independently of its status. In other words, in case of partial failure of the power utility the load will be connected to the mains (supposing the mains has the proper voltage to hold the coil of the power utility contactor), The battery charger inside the automatic transfer switch panel will continue to work to hold charged the battery of the generator.

 GSM BASED MONITORING

The serial interface is running all the time to guarantee GSM & INTERNET connectivity. To shut down totally the automatic transfer switch you are required to remove the dc power supply. Please note that in MANUAL mode of operation you cannot activate the automatic transfer switch from a remote location. However, the OFF mode of operation allows you to turn the automatic transfer switch to AUTO or TEST mode of operation. 

HOW TO USE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH MANUAL MODE

 The MANUAL mode allows manual control of the engine and contactors directly on the automatic transfer switch (or change-over switche if you will)Push the [MAN] push button to select the MANUAL mode for the automatic transfer switch. Push the [START] push button until engine starts; the display indicates the message [. . . .] during the starting attempts (and [! ! ! !] during the preheat). When the engine is running, the green LED turns on.  Push the [ I ] (KG) push button to close the contactor of the Generator. To transfer the Load to Mains, push the [I] (KM) push button (the [KG] will open).

HOW TO OPEN A CIRCUIT

 To open a contactor, push the [O] push button. In manual mode the CHANGEOVER timer lasts one second. To stop the engine, push the [STOP] push button until the [StOP] message appears on the display. If the engine has already stopped, it is possible to reset the STOP sequence by pressing the [STOP] push button. In MANUAL mode of operation, the automatic transfer switch will not transfer the load based on remote commands. The remote request (via switches or serial interface) is taken into consideration only in AUTO mode of operation.

 

HOW TO SELECT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH AUTO MODE

 How to use the Auto mode s really simple. Push the [AUTO] push button until the green LED illuminates. The engine starts when the Be142 detects a Mains failure. The contactor of the MAINS (KM) opens after the BREAKER timing. After the warm-up time, if the Voltage and Frequency are within the settings, the contactor of the Generator (KG) will close. If the Mains restores, the KG will open. The KM will close following a programmed changeover timing. The Engine will stop after a cooling down time. If the engine shuts down, the KM closes independently of the Mains status if the [P.48] is [ON] (NFPA-110 mode), otherwise the KM will close only if the Mains is within programmed settings.

HOW TO TEST THE ENGINE

In AUTO mode, the Be142 will periodically test the engine if the parameters [P.41] and [P.42] have been programmed. During this test, the green LED of the AUTO mode will continue to blink. In AUTO mode, the Be142 can start and stop the engine according to programmed inputs.  In AUTO mode of operation, the automatic transfer switch may transfer the load based on remote commands. The remote request (via switches or serial interface) is taken into consideration only in AUTO mode of operation. By entering the OFF mode of operation you cancel any remote request made upon the automatic transfer switch.

 

HOW TO TEST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

Push the [TEST] push button until the green LED illuminates. The Be142 starts the engine and transfers the load to the Generator if the adjustable parameter [P.17] is set to [on]. If the parameter is set to [oFF] the automatic transfer switch will not transfer the load to the generator except when the power utility fails to provide the electrical parameters within the settings.To stop the engine, select the AUTO mode (if Mains is present) or select the OFF mode. If you push the [STOP] push button when the Be142 is in AUTO or TEST, the [Er.09] will energise. To clear the alarm, select the OFF mode.

HOW TO MANAGE ALARMS FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

 The automatic transfer switch controller features Shutdowns (the engine stops and the panels transfer the load to the power utility) and Warnings (the engine will continue to run without affecting the connection of the load) and provides:

A) - a general indication of alarm presence by means of the message [ALAr.] on the display

B) - 4 configurable outputs for specific alarm indication with more than 40 options 

C) - symbols on the front panel to indicate the most important alarms

D) - display messages indicating warnings and shutdowns about the automatic transfer switch

E) - a push button to silence the Horn ([ACK-F10]) of the automatic tranfser switch

A relay and a HORN should be externally provided. To silence the HORN, push the [ACK-F10] push button or wait for the adjustable timer [P.50] to expire. If the [P.50] is set to [OFF], the only way to silence the Horn is by means of the [ACK-F10] push button.To browse the alarm memory push the [→F9] push button. To display alarm details, push the [←F8] push button. To clear the alarm from the panel, remove the cause of the alarm and then press the [OFF] push button.
